 January 5th - 9th

Happy New Year! We hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday.

It was great to be back together as a grade three community this past week. Students did a fantastic job jumping right back into routines and learning.

What did students do this week?

This week in Social Studies, students learned about treaties in Alberta. They read information, explored maps, and watched short videos to help them understand where treaties are located across the province. Students also discussed why treaties were negotiated and signed, including the reasons both First Nations and the government came to agreements. To show their learning, students created visual journal pages with drawings and key facts to share what they learned in a clear and thoughtful way.

Student Social Studies Learning Outcomes (I can…)

  • I can identify treaties on a map of Alberta.

  • I can discuss reasons why treaties were negotiated and signed.

Possible Questions to Ask Your Child

  • Which numbered treaty land is Calgary on?

  • What information did you learn about how treaties got their number?

  • What is a treaty?

  • Why were treaties signed?
